Free Indoor Play Areas in DFW: Where to Go When It's 105 Outside

When it is 105 degrees outside (or raining sideways, this is Texas), you do not have to spend $20 a kid to burn energy indoors. These are the free indoor play areas we have actually visited, with the details that matter.

The church play areas (the best-kept secret in DFW)

Several DFW churches open genuinely great indoor playgrounds to the whole community on weekdays, no membership and no strings. These are the four we keep going back to:

CityScape at CityBridge Community Church in Plano is a little play-city: rope tunnel bridges, busy boards built into mini skyscrapers, and room to run. Perfect for ages 1 to 6. Closed Fridays, so call (214) 313-2000 to confirm hours.

KIDZPlay at Prestonwood in Plano is open to everyone Monday to Friday, 10 am to 4 pm, ages 10 and under. The three-story slide is the star. Bring your photo ID for check-in.

Preston Trail Community Church in Frisco has a free indoor park with seating for parents. Community hours are Monday to Thursday, 10 am to 2 pm, plus Sunday mornings.

Watermark Community Church in Dallas has a big fort-style play area. Important: it is all wood and full of stairs, so this one is for bigger kids, not babies. Open weekdays 8 am to 5 pm.

The libraries with actual play areas

Your library card is basically a free VIP pass, and some branches go beyond books:

• Frisco Public Library has a play area inside the library, toward the back next to the storytime space.
• Garland Central Library is great for homeschool families and has a nursing room for moms.
• West Garland Branch Library has a colorful kids area we loved.

Almost every DFW library also runs free storytime multiple times a week. Each one is different, so check your local branch's calendar.

Free-ish honorable mentions

• Some McDonald's locations still have free indoor playgrounds (the one at 1251 E Belt Line Rd in Richardson does). You buy the fries, they get the playground.
• Mall play areas: Firewheel Town Center in Garland has a play space near Carter's at the center of the mall.

Mom tips before you go

• Always check hours before driving over. Church play areas close for events, and the hours above can change.
• Most of these ask you to check in at a front desk; keep your photo ID handy.
• Socks. Just always pack socks.
