The Best Free Splash Pads in DFW, Checked Out in Person

A Texas summer is basically three months of finding water. These are the free splash pads we have actually visited as a family, with the field notes I wish someone had given me.

East side: Rockwall, Fate, Royse City, Josephine

Harry Myers Park in Rockwall is our overall favorite: free splash pad, shaded playground next to it, picnic spots, and the KidZone playground with two zip lines a short walk away. Watch the entrances: one is for the park, one for the splash pad.

Robert Smith Family Park in Fate has a woodland-creature splash pad, a covered playground, and shaded seating, plus pickleball and basketball if the big kids need more.

Royse City Splash Pad downtown is small and easy with a park next door, and Josephine City Park is the small-town sleeper hit with bathrooms on site.

North and central: Carrollton, Garland, Richardson border

Oak Hills Splash Park in Carrollton is sized right for littles, with plenty of seating and a great park next to it.

Watson Park sits on the Richardson and Garland border: splash pad, inclusive playground, and a shady gazebo. The mom tip everyone thanks me for: touch the blue pole with the green handprint to activate the water.

Dallas proper

Halperin Park is the deck park over I-35E in Oak Cliff, right next to the Dallas Zoo. The giant tipping bucket is the main event. Parking is tight, so plan on walking a little or ridesharing.

And while it is not technically a splash pad, the fountains at Klyde Warren Park downtown perform to music several times a day and kids absolutely treat them like one.

The splash pad packing list

• Water shoes: pads get HOT by mid-morning
• Towels plus a full change of clothes
• Sunscreen, reapplied more than you think
• A blanket, for the parks where bench seating fills up
• Snacks, because water play doubles appetites

When do splash pads run?

Most DFW city splash pads run roughly May through September, daytime hours. Cities occasionally shut one down for maintenance, so if it is a long drive, a quick search of the city's parks page before you go can save the day.
